Virtual Field Trips

Note: Virtual Field Trips with the Merge AR/VR Headset are only available for Android phones. We rely on YouTube for viewing VR videos on a mobile device, and Google has ended support for this format on iPhone.

With the Merge AR/VR Headset, you can go anywhere! You can explore the solar system, walk with dinosaurs, travel the world, see life from new perspectives, and more.

Be sure to check out our “Getting Started with your Merge AR/VR Headset” guide for safety information and how to set up your Viewer Profile.

Follow these steps to learn how you can go on a virtual field trip using the Merge AR/VR Headset:

Step 1: Download the YouTube app

For most virtual field trips on the Miniverse, you will need to have the YouTube app installed on your device. Because Google ended support VR Mode format on iPhones, it will ONLY work on Android devices. Here is the link to download the app:

Step 2: Find Virtual Field Trips on the Miniverse

You can browse through our curated library of virtual field trips at Miniverse.io or, simply search for VR experiences on YouTube. Try these to get started:

Once you have found the video you would like to experience, launch it by tapping the “Watch on YouTube” button. Move your device around or swipe around the screen to look around the video in 360 degrees!

Step 3: Learn How to Use VR Mode

Use the Merge Headset to put yourself right in the middle of the scene.

1: Set up your Viewer Profile

The viewer profile tells YouTube to optimize the image for the Merge headset. Learn more about how to set up your Viewer Profile in the help article "Getting Started with your Merge AR/VR Headset".

2: View in high resolution

Adjust the quality to the highest quality your network will support, by tapping on the menu icon at the top right of the screen to open the options, then selecting "Quality".

3: Enter VR Mode

To do this, pause the video, then tap the menu icon at the top-right of the screen to open the options. Tap “Watch in VR” (bottom option) to swap to VR Mode which will split the image in two.

Step 4: Put your Device into the Merge Headset

Once in VR Mode, simply slide your device into the Merge headset, and adjust the lenses until you see the video clearly.

Use the interactive buttons at the top of the headset to begin playing the experience.

Now that you’ve learned how to take a virtual field trip with the Merge Headset, you can experience learning first hand and see life from new perspectives!
