Exporting Objects from Autodesk Maya

Autodesk Maya is a powerful 3D computer animation, modeling, simulation, and rendering software that allows users to create expansive worlds, complex characters, and dazzling effects.

​In this article, we will show you how you can export your 3D objects from Maya into a compatible file format for upload into the Object Viewer app for viewing on the Merge Cube.

Follow these instructions to find out how to export your 3D object from Maya:

Step 1 - Open the Object you wish to Export

  1. Launch Maya, then go to “File” > “Open Scene” to open the scene with your object.
  2. Select the object you want to export by clicking on the object

Step 2 - Go to File > Export Selection and choose a compatible file type

  1. With your object selected, tap “File”, then “Export Selection”
  2. Select the folder where you want to save your 3D object
  3. Give your object a Name
  4. Select “FBX export” as the file type

Step 3 - Select the right export options before exporting

Make sure the following are checked under “Geometry”:

  • Smoothing Groups
  • Smooth Mesh

Make sure the following are checked under “Animation”:

  • Animation

Make sure the following are checked under “Bake Animation”:

  • Bake Animation
  • Resample All

Make sure the following are checked under “Embed Media”:

  • Embed Media

Under “FBX File Format”:

  • Set Type to “Binary”

Then, tap “Export Selection” to export your object

Step 3 - Upload your Object using Object Uploader

Now you can sign-in to your Merge Account on the Dashboard and upload your 3D Object using the Object Uploader.

Step 4 - Confirm your Material Settings

For objects with texture or materials, be sure to open the Object Editor by tapping on “Edit 3D Settings”, then you can adjust your materials to your liking then click  “Save” and “Finish”.

Be sure to do this, even if the default settings are correct!

Step 5 - View and Share with Object Viewer

Finally, you can use the Merge app, Object Viewer, to view your own 3D Object in the palm of your hand, or share your object with your class.
